Audi A4 35 TDI Review : A Gentleman's Fancy

Updated: Dec 4, 2019

The Audi A4 was launched in its diesel avatar, 2 years back. This was much after the petrol version came. The A4 35TDI meets Euro 6 norms and is even BS 6 ready. Currently though, it is tuned to meet BS4 fuel requirements. So, how is this car to drive and to live with? We take a spin in this executive sedan, to tell you whether you should buy it.

Design

The A4 looks like a typical Audi, with the same family look. The DRLs look sharp within the headlamps and the large grille looks imposing. The side and rear is crisp and neat. The boot bears the ’35 TDI’ badge, differentiating it from the petrol version.

Interior

The interior is even better, with quality materials and great fit finish. The feel you get inside is as good as it can get. The four spoke steering wheel feels very Audi-ish and the virtual cockpit is amazing too. This is available only on the technology trim, though. The MMI infotainment system makes the A4 quite advanced in terms of tech.

Comfort is another area where this car excels, as the seats provide great comfort for all passengers. The rear offers generous leg room an one can be comfortable being chauffer-driven all day as well.

Performance

The A4 is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. The power you get is 190bhp and the torque is an excellent 400Nm. However, this is a front wheel drive car, unlike its main competitors and has no Quattro option as well. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission does duty in this car and the experience is nothing short of delightful.

The Audi A4 diesel is quite a performer. It takes about 8.25 seconds for the 0-100 km/h time, which is mighty impressive. Throttle response is quick and you settle down getting used to it in no time. There is hardly any turbo lag either. It has a strong mid-range, between 2500-4500 rpm. The dual-clutch transmission feels quick and seamless. It also offers a manual mode and has paddle shifters to play the race driver. The car always feels in control. Though it may lack the sporty edge of say a BMW, the A4 balances quite well in terms of comfort and handling.

Drive Dynamics

There are four driving modes - Normal, Dynamic, Auto and Individual, one can choose as per individual driving preference. The modes alter the engine power delivery and the steering dynamics, however the suspension is not connected to these modes and remains unchanged. The ride quality of the A4 is worth a mention as it is pliant and comfortable. It works well on our unpredictable roads, as sudden bumps potholes do not pass on jerks inside. Also, the setup is not very firm, hence, the ride is on the softer side. The cabin is free from unwanted noise and makes you feel comfortable.

Verdict

Well, if you are making a decision for a sub-50 lakh sedan, the Audi A4 35 TDI makes a lot of sense. It is powerful, quite loaded with tech, has the right balance of comfort and driving pleasure and the refinement levels from the diesel engine are right up there. To top it, this is a fuel efficient car as well. Our city drives returned 11km/l in the city and about 16.5 km/l on the highway.

The Audi A4 35TDI prices begin at Rs. 40.3 lakhs and go upto Rs. 43.5 lakhs (ex-showroom). Driving this car is indeed a pleasurable experience and exactly what would suit a gentleman.
