Suzuki Jimny is manufactured in India for left-hand drive countries and is likely to be here 5 door version with a nameplate "Gypsy". MSIL is evaluating the feasibility of it being launched in the domestic market. The required tools, as well as dies, are there in place.
Shrivastava, Executive director for Marketing and Sales at Maruti Suzuki confirmed that the Jimny is being evaluated for an India launch.
Maruti Suzuki Jimny has been the talk of the town since it was showcased in AutoExpo in February 2020. However, for the Indian car market, a 5-door version makes more sense. The Jimny can then practically be a full-fledged family car. Seeing the increasing sales of its rival Mahindra Thar, MSIL is considering to get Jimny in India.
The Jimny though will only have a 1.5-litre petrol engine. This is the same engine from the Ciaz, Ertiga, XL6 as well as the S-Cross and Vitara Brezza. It makes 104hp of power and 138Nm. The engine will be paired with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. The SUV is will be built on a ladder frame chassis, employ 4-wheel drive and ride on 16-inch alloy wheels. Jimny has a Euro NCAP 3 star rating along with 6 airbags.
Jimny is expected to launch in India in premium NEXA showrooms as it would bring more customers to NEXA outlets.
